The various dinosaurs and other creatures inArk: Survival Ascendedcan be converted into useful mounts for exploration and combat, but some are much harder to tame than others. The size and aggressiveness of a creature are only two small factors that could determine how hard it is to pacify. Some dinosaurs take a much longer time to tame, requiring you to complete tasks or hunt down specific items.

Although most creatures can be tamed by knocking them out, youget better bonuses from beasts you tame when you do so non-violently. This could include raising them from infancy or following them around and feeding them their favorite food until they are friendly with your character. While manycreatures tamed early inArk: Survival Ascendedare easily won over without violence, later dinosaurs aren’t so receptive.

10Shadowmane

Feed It While It Sleeps

One of the more annoying creatures to tame is theShadowmane, a cat-like creature that resembles a saber-tooth tiger with feathers. This beast is extremely aggressive, attacking you if it ever spots your character getting near it. This makes it difficult to tame, as you can’t follow it around easily without getting noticed.

While you could attack a creature to knock it out for taming, this will decrease its Taming Effectiveness, limiting the strength of whichever beast you’re trying to tame when it becomes a friendly mount.

To tame a Shadowmane, you have tocollect Fish Baskets and feed them to it while it sleeps. This is the only non-violent way to tame the creature, but Fish Baskets take a while to fill completely, so this process can take a long time. Furthermore, you have to do this multiple times to fully tame a Shadowmane, meaning you’ll have to find it sleeping soundly more than once.

9Amargasaurus

Hunt With This Dinosaur To Befriend It

TheAmargasaurusis a spined dinosaur that youcan only tame by hunting with itwhile it is still a wild animal. Obviously, this raises some issues, as the Amargasaurus will attack you on sight if it perceives you as an enemy. You have to find a way to trick this creature into thinking you are part of its pack before you can even start thinking about befriending it.

Ark: Survival Ascended- Everything Included In The New Extinction Ascended & Wasteland War Update

Ark: Survival Ascended’s Extinction update is here, along with the Wasteland War DLC. Here’s what the new map, creatures, and game mode include.

You have tosync your character’s internal temperature with an Amargasaurus’to convince it you are part of its herd. This is a complicated task, as only certain food items inArk: Survival Ascendedcan lower or raise your temperature for an extended time. You’ll need to consume whichever items can do this multiple times as you hunt alongside an Amargasaurus.

Once you have matched your temperatures with an Amargasaurus, you then need todefeat several creatures with itover time. The more creatures you hunt together, the higher an Amargasaurus' Taming Effectiveness rises. Unfortunately, the Amargasaurus is relatively weak, so you need tofind ways to survivein fights against other creatures while also keeping your potential mount alive too.

8Rhyniognatha

Hatch This Creature Through Another Beast

The giant, flying insect known as theRhyniognathais one ofArk: Survival Ascended’s more well-known difficult tames. Unlike other beasts, this creature can only be tamed when raised from as an infant; it cannot be made friendly when you find it as an adult. To tame a Rhyniognatha, you need to complete these steps:

Doing this causes the Female Rhyniognatha you’ve injured to inject the creature doused in the Pheromone with her egg. Over time, that injected creature will host the baby Rhyniognatha, allowing it to gestate in its body until it hatches. The more Drag Weight an injected creature has, the stronger the resulting baby Rhynio will bewhen it bursts free.

During the time it takes for a baby Rhyniognatha to hatch, you need to feed the injected creature multiple kinds of specific food. This takes time, but will result in a much stronger offspring when it appears.

You need to ensure an injected creature can survive the gestation period to produce a Rhyniognatha, otherwise, both host and parasite will die during the process. As a result, the parameters behind taming this creature are lengthy and sensitive, making it extremely hard to get as a mount.

7Troodon

Sacrifice Your Other Creatures

There are no dinosaurs more frustrating to tame than theTroodon, a weaker creature who should only be made friendly as a trophy for experienced players. Serving little to no purpose once tamed, there are dozens of better dinosaurs that are way easier to befriend. The reason why Troodon is so difficult to tame is thatyou have to sacrifice your other tamed dinosaurs to make a Troodon passive.

The higher level the Troodon, the higher the level of creatures you have to sacrifice to it for it to be tamed. This process can be agonizing, asonly the strongest beasts in your menagerie will satisfy a greedy Troodonlooking to be tamed. Troodons also are picky about what they attack, making it hard to tame them even when you set up a trap with creatures from your collection that won’t fight back.

6Noglin

Invest In Mind Control Multiple Times

Noglinsare tiny creatures that possess the power to take over the bodies of other dinosaurs and beasts in the wild. Due to their size, Noglins are hard enough to find as is, but taming one is another matter altogether. To make this creature friendly, you have toallow it to take over the minds of your other tamed mounts, then survive its attempts to kill you while controlling them.

Taming a Noglin is similar to taming a Troodon, only this time you can regain control of creatures the Noglin takes over since it doesn’t kill them.

However, to gain the most Taming Effectiveness, you can’t let a Noglin take over just any small creature in your care. Youhave to let a Noglin take over large creatures with a high levelto max out their potential. This usually means sacrificing dinosaurs above Level 200 at least, then surviving the Noglin’s assault without engaging withArk: Survival Ascended’s combat systems.

5Megachelon

Keep Multiple Creatures Alive For One Tame

Spawning on land, the giant sea turtle called theMegachelonhas a one-of-a-kind taming method that can be quite difficult to accomplish. Although a non-violent creature by nature, the only way to tame a Megachelon is tolure fish to clean the barnacles off the Megachelon’s underbelly. While this may seem like a simple task, this process is incredibly sensitive and can get disrupted easily.

The only place where you can attract a school of fish is far away from where a Megachelon spawns, so you need to travel far to get the resource needed for the taming process.

low-level-t-rex-ark-survival-ascended.jpg

Once you bring back fish to a Megachelon to start taming it, Sabertooth Salmon will immediately spawn trying to kill the fish you brought. You have toprotect the fish long enough for them to clean the Megachelon entirelyto tame the creature. Furthermore, if the Megachelon is hit by a wild creature even once during the cleaning, its taming bar resets and you have to start over.

Keeping the fish cleaning a Megachelon alive and making sure the Megachelon doesn’t get hurt can be overwhelming. Since each set of creatures has its own AI controlling its movements, you may want to trap both to ensure this process doesn’t get interrupted. Those struggling to tame a Megachelon may want to even consider usingconsole commands inArk: Survival Ascendedto always succeed at this complex task.

4Astrocetus

Damage The Creature In Only One Spot

TheAstrocetus, known as the"Space Whale"by some players, is a pain to tame solely due to the equipment necessary to do so. The method required to tame this massive beast is that youhave to deal damage using cannons against the Astrocetus by landing only headshotson the creature. Unlike other organisms, it’s immediately apparent why an Astrocetus is difficult to befriend.

CraftingTech Engrams inArk: Survival Ascendedcan help you tame an Astrocetus by giving you the right weapons or vehicle to combat it. Hover Skiffs, Rocket Launchers, or Mechs are great for fulfilling the taming requirements of this creature.

The movements of an Astrocetus are unpredictable, as its flight leaves it moving in erratic patterns. You almost need a flying vehicle or mount with a cannon strapped to itto even have a chance of hitting this creature in the right place. Considering how hard it is to have a cannon and make cannonballs in the first place, having to then aim each shot at an Astrocetus' head will take a lot of trial and error.

3Voidwyrm

Use The Rarest Resource To Tame A Final Boss

Out of all the Wyrms you can tame inArk: Survival Ascended, theVoidwyrmis by far the hardest to befriend. This creature is already a powerful enemy you have to face in battle with strong equipment, but taming it requires one of the rarest items in the game. To tame this creature, you have to follow these steps:

Mutagel is an extremely rare item to find, with Mutagen being one of the hardest objects to ever obtain in a playthrough as well. You have to farm tons of Mutagel to craft a Mutagen using mining tools and equipment on specific Asteroids in the Space Void. Even when you do have a Mutagen at your disposal, fighting a Voidwyrm without killing it is challenging, as is finding a way to mount it for the final taming quick time event.

2Ice Titan

Destroy Core Parts To Tame A Kaiju

TheIce Titanis the hardest among the Kaiju-like Titan creatures to tame, mostly due to how dangerous it is as a boss. Like all Titans, the only way to tame the Ice Titan is to destroy its crystal weak pointsall over its body. These are represented by glowing purple clusters of crystals near several of the beast’s joints, which you have to destroy in a certain order to tame the giant.

One of the reasons why the Ice Titan is so hard to tame is how long it takes to summon. This process requires gathering several rare materials and finishing many tedious tasks.

Fighting the Ice Titan is already a hard task, similar to the Voidwyrm or Astrocetus creatures. Dealing too much damage to the Titan beyond its weak points will weaken its Taming Effectiveness as well, forcing you to be very careful as you combat it. You canuse mechs or precise attacks to destroy weak points, but you have to only attack those parts to obtain the strongest tamed version of the Ice Titan.

1Phoenix

Limited Time To Catch A Singular Creature

Arguably the rarest creature to tame is thePhoenix, a creature that you’re able to only have one of during the course of your playthrough. Similar to other mythical creatures like Fenrir, a Phoenix is an ultra-rare entity that you can hunt for days but never find. Introduced during theScorched Earthupdate forArk: Survival Ascended, a Phoenix can be foundduring a limited-time event called a Heatwave.

Heatwaves are few and far between, only occurring during the hottest moments in arid environments. During Heatwaves, it can be difficult to see and survive in equal measure, for both your character and whatever creatures you have tamed. Since a Phoenix is a flying creature, youneed to have a flying mount that can resist the heatto track one down.

Ark: Survival Ascended’s New Scorched Earth Map Compared To The Island

Ark: Survival Ascended got its fame from The Island but the Scorched Earth DLC creates a unique new experience without diminishing its predecessor.

Once you spot one, you need toinflict a certain amount of Fire damage on a Phoenix to tame it. Fire damage is limited to specific weapons or mounts that can breathe fire, but even when do have a source for this damage type, a Phoenix is very elusive. Due to how short a Heatwave is, there’s very little chance you’ll get to tame it before it turns to ash at the end of the environmental event.

Thankfully,a Phoenix will respawn at the exact place where it turned to ashes during the next Heatwave, giving you another chance to tame it. You can use other dinosaur tracking abilities to pinpoint exactly where a Phoenix will reappear. Once you apply enough fire to the Phoenix when it comes back, you can claim one of the hardest creatures to tame inArk: Survival Ascendedfor yourself.
