1000-lb SistersstarAmanda Haltermanhas lost a lot of weight since having bariatric surgery in March 2023, and she’s been at many different weights. The series, which premiered in 2020, centers on the weight-loss journeys of Tammy Slaton and Amy Slaton, but their sister, 43-year-old Amanda, has also gotten in on the action. Amanda didn’t appear on the show until season 4 because she was going through a divorce. Though she wasn’t on the show during the first few years, she has always been close to Tammy, Amy, and her other Slaton siblings.
Amanda and her siblings grew up in Shawneetown, Illinois, though they weren’t always raised under the same roof. Unlike her sisters, Tammy and Amy, Amanda didn’t struggle with emotional eating issues while growing up. In fact,she was always considered to be the skinny oneof the bunch. It wasn’t until after she got married and started having children (Amanda has four kids) that the1000-lb Sistersseason 6star started putting on the pounds. Amanda had her second bariatric surgery in March 2023, and she has changed dramatically.

While Amanda didn’t appear on1000-lb Sistersuntil a later season, her older sister, 48-year-old Misty Wentworth, was there from the beginning. Like her siblings, Misty had gained a lot of weight, and she was desperate to do something about it. During1000-lb Sistersseason 5, Amanda and Misty make a big announcement to Tammy, Amy, and their brother, 44-year-old Chris Combs,about wanting to undergo weight-loss surgery. “Me and Misty’s been going to see Dr. Smith,” Amanda told her siblings. Dr. Eric Smith is the bariatric surgeon who treated Tammy as well as Chris.

Amanda reportedly already had bariatric surgery for the first time in 2014, long before appearing on1000-lb Sisters. Amanda lost over 300 pounds after the surgery but ultimately put the weight back on over time. It’s not uncommon for some people to get the surgery twice, but revisionweight-loss surgery has a higher risk of complications than the first time around. In March 2024,Amandaposted about the fact that it was the first anniversary of her surgery, or “surgeversary.”

It’s unclear if this will be Misty’s first bariatric surgery, but it’s known Amanda had already had the surgery once before. During the gripping1000-lb Sistersscene, Amy feared for Misty and Amanda’s lives. “Hearing Amanda and Misty get worked up about the surgery and them not making it out, it’s scary,” Amy said, adding, “One slip and, oop, Amanda’s gone, or, oop, Misty’s gone. I need my sisters […] it’s family.” Amanda and Misty Thankfully,Amanda and Misty made it through their surgeries with flying colors, which they had back-to-back on the same day.

She Lost Ground
Since theanniversary of Amanda’s sleeve bypass surgery, she has suffered setbacks and put on some weight. Part of the problem was that Amanda had some health issues, including needing knee surgery. While she was off her feet recovering from the procedure, she obviously couldn’t exercise, soshe put some of the weight back on. Since recovering fully, she has been intent on getting back on the horse and continuing her weight-loss journey.
Amanda Struggled With Emotional Setbacks Too
RJ Broke Her Heart
Aside from physical setbacks,Amanda suffered setbacks in her personal life. While filming1000-lb Sistersseason 4, Amanda quietly finalized her divorce from her ex-husband, Jason Halterman. Though the couple parted ways in August 2020, their divorce wasn’t finalized until two years later, in August 2022. Jason is the brother of Michael Halterman, who was married to Amy until their recent divorce. Amanda and Jason were married in December 1998 andhad four sons together during those 22 years. Upon finding herself single again, Amanda opened her heart to finding love again.
After her divorce, Amanda dated a few men, but nothing clicked until she met RJ.

In a scene posted to YouTube byTLC,Amandaannounces her plan to move to Florida to be with a new man. Sadly, the relationship was short-lived. In February, Amandaposted a now-deleted photo of her and her then-boyfriend on TikTok, with the song “Little Life” by Cordelia playing in the background. In the image, RJ’s face is partially visible as he kisses the back of Amanda’s head while they pose on an idyllic beach somewhere. Amanda’s caption reads, “@RJV I love life with you, Can’t wait to be back on the beach!!” Amanda’s happiness would be short-lived.
In June,Amandaposted a TikTok explaining thather boyfriend, RJ, had ghosted her completely.According to Amanda’s TikTok, she hadn’t seen her boyfriend since May 1, when he had left town to visit family, and never returned. They were supposed to meet in Kentucky in late May but never showed up. Amanda tried contacting him, but she received no response. She even tried contacting members of his family, whom she’d grown close to during the relationship, but none of them responded. The man she thought she’d spend the rest of her life with had disappeared without a trace.

After her devastating split from RJ,Amanda moved back to Kentucky to heal, and moved in with her sister Amy. Since Amy had just gone through her own divorce, the1000-lb Sistersstar appreciated having Amanda around to help with her two small children, Glenn and Gabe Halterman. Amanda was able to bounce back from the challenges and is currently resuming her weight-loss journey.
