Even years after its launch,Animal Crossing: New Horizonscontinues to surprise players, from realizing whatobjects like the pet bed were really forto stumbling across different rarer types of fairly regular objects. Throughout the game, players are able to customize their island to their specific tastes completely with crafted structures, furniture and more, and can interact with a variety of villagers who inhabit it.
RedditorTheVeggieLifetook to the r/AnimalCrossing subreddit with an amusing anecdote about how their friend informed them about starter houses for the first time after three years of playing, with a self-deprecating joke about being “trash” at the game as they also noted that they only found out last year that they could run in the game as well.
The post showed a couple of characters with the penguin villager Aurora in a very simple starter house with a table, chair, bookshelf, and kitchen appliances, and then Aurora’s actual house, which is made of ice and better resembles something out ofFrozen.

And How Can They Be Upgraded?
One of the first things players have to do when playingAnimal Crossing: New Horizonsis build three plots on their islands and bring in villagers to live on them. These three villagers and the two that the player arrives with on the island are referred to as “starter” villagers. As such, all five of them can get upgraded from their tents to have starter houses, which arerelatively generic builds with default interiors consisting of basic furniture, flooring, and wallpaper.These are often tailored to their base personalities: big sister, jock, normal, preppy, and lazy.
The other five villagers who can inhabit the island later will have their default house, which is unique to each of them, like Aurora’s ice-based home.
While noted by one of the commenters on TheVeggieLife’s post, some starter houses can be nicer than some of the villagers' default builds. However, this is fairly rare. Previously, there was a workaround of removing a starter villager and re-inviting them to the island again later, but following the release of the game’sHappy Home ParadiseDLC, it is possible to talk to Isabelle about renovating these starter houses to suit the individual villager’s default style better, which is a far easier workaround.
This makes far more sense, as each character having their own unique home is far more in keeping with some of the other elaborate builds players can make for themselves inAnimal Crossing: New Horizons, especially as they begin to collect more Bells and materials to spend on such creations.
