Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids (2023)

The 2023 edition of the Fire HD 10 Kids offers a few upgrades on the previous generation. It’s lighter and 25 percent faster, while the camera has benefited from an upgrade to a 5MP resolution. The same Full HD display remains, as does the kid-proof casing and parental controls. With the battery life also improved, kids can enjoy all the child-safe apps they could before, but for longer.

Pricing and Availability

The Amazon Fire HD 10 Kids is available now through Amazon and other major retailers. This tablet retails for $149.99 and has a few color options for the kid-friendly and kid-proof case. It also comes with a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+, which gives the tablet access to a ton of content right out of the gate.

Specifications

In a Case, Out of the Box

Upon unboxing, I was greeted with the Fire HD 10 Kids tablet already in the bumper case. I’m not sure what I expected, but it’s probably the case and the tablet should be separate or more integrated rather than just a tablet in a box in a box, but I digress. Seeing a tablet already in the case was not a bad thing, just shocking.

Signing in was easy right away. I connected the tablet to my Amazon account, set up my kids' profiles, downloaded games and shows, and ensured there were good parental blocks to prevent my kids from accidentally stumbling upon inappropriate content.

The simple design showcases the 10.1-inch HD display in the center of a vibrant and fun bumper case. Even the interface after setup is focused on kids. It’s hard to explain, but the UI (user interface) is built for kids, a bonus for a child-focused tablet.

Parent Made, Kid-Approved

The case that I briefly mentioned is this tablet’s first and most prominent feature and design element. It’s robust, colorful, and great for bumps, drops, and occasional sword battles. Amazon deems this case kid-proof, and in my experience, it is.

Admittedly, my kids have dropped this tablet several times; it’s been bumped, knocked over, and sat on by the kiddos. The rubberized bumper protection is nearly perfect, and the bright colors make it so these tablets are easy to identify if there is more than one. It also makes the kids feel like it is a bit more their speed—or at least more than just another metal and glass iPad.

The 10.1-inch screen is a fantastic size for kids as well. As popular tablets are getting bigger and thinner (like theiPad Air), I’ve often thought these would be too big and cumbersome for children to tote around and maneuver while watching or playing. Additionally, when they used my smartphone, it seemed too small for them as they could lose it quickly, it’s harder to navigate, and it could be more fun for games and shows.

The 10.1-inch display has proven to be a fantastic middle ground between size and portability, even with the intense case.

Every Day Is Childsplay

These days, devices need a ton of RAM to drive all the programs and apps we put on tablets, phones, and computers. I was weary of the 3GB of RAM onboard this tablet, even though Amazon claims a 25% performance boost from the previous generation.

However, I have not noticed any throttling or issues, partially due to this tablet’s lightweight and straightforward OS. I’m impressed with the app loading speed—something I didn’t think about, but it is super helpful for a toddler’s attention span.

Speaking of entertainment, this tablet has access to an impressive range of kids' content, thanks toAmazon Kids+. This includes books, games, apps, and videos. Amazon includes a free one-year subscription with the tablet’s purchase.

Built into the tablet’s core functionality, the parental controls are extensive and easy to use. I was weary as I wanted to avoid always hopping on my kid’s table to approve things for them, or what if I was not home, and so on. Yes, it is silly to be wary of, but nevertheless, I was pleased to see that I would not need to approve or lock items on the actual device. Instead, I used the companion app on my phone using the parent dashboard.

The last feature I want to mention quickly is the battery life. We have (admittedly) come to rely on at least some tablet time on long car rides and while navigating working from home, naptimes, and homeschooling. This tablet’s 13-hour battery life has been fantastic, easily lasting an entire day of use, and then we plugged it in at a charging station at the end of the day.

Even on long car rides, I did not have to worry about running charging cables or having my infant awoken mid-nap by a toddler screaming their tablet died.
