Summary

AtSan Diego Comic-Con2024,Screen Rantgot a glimpse into what the future holds forFamily Guyseason 23 — and it’s been confirmed by panelists that the show will finally break a massive Stewie Griffin rule after 25 years of holding steady. The Seth MacFarlane-created show confirmed other exciting season 23 tidbits, including thatGlen Powell will joinFamily Guy’s Halloween special. On (and off) the air since 1999,Family Guyhas explored a ton of storylines over the course of its 424 episodes, but the long-running animated sitcom shows no signs of slowing down.

Known for its meta cutaway gags,Family Guycenters on the Griffins — an incredibly dysfunctional familythat calls Quahog, Rhode Island home. Led into hijinks by the bumbling Peter Griffin,Family Guy’s cast of characters also includes hardworking mother Lois Griffin, the couple’s kids — Meg, Chris, and the conniving baby Stewie — and the talking dog Brian. While there have been plenty ofFamily Guymoments that made viewers quitthe show altogether, the 23rd outing seems to be pushing the envelope a bit more, especially when it comes to the news about its brand-new Stewie plotline.

Alex Borstein Confirms Lois Will Finally Understand Stewie Speaking In Family Guy Season 23

Stewie Will Finally Chat With The Character He (Seemingly) Loathes Most

Downright diabolic at times, the young Stewie Griffin may have the mannerisms of an adult, but he certainly can’t be understood by every member of the Griffin family. In fact, aside from a few choice moments, Lois (voice of Alex Borstein) can’t understand her youngest son at all. During the SDCC panel, Borstein shared thatFamily Guyseason 23 will break that long unspoken rule:Lois will finally, andintentionally, understand Stewieinstead of disregarding his chatter as baby talk. Given that Stewie is often plotting Lois' death, the plot twist could drive a wedge or bring them closer.

“The two are high together, and Lois can finally hear Stewie talk,” Bornstein confirmed.

Screen Rantlearned a little bit about the episode in question at the San Diego Comic-Con panel, with Lois' voice actor, Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), giving some insight into the history-makingFamily Guymoment.According to Borstein, Stewie accidentally finds some weed, leading Lois to partake as well. “The two are high together, and Lois can finally hear Stewie talk,” Bornstein confirmed. While the panel didn’t elaborate too much on where the episode will lead from there, it’s clear thatFamily Guyseason 23is pulling out all the stops to tackle long-awaited storylines.

The Family Guy Movie Has 1 Major Obstacle That It Will Struggle To Overcome

Seth MacFarlane confirmed that the Family Guy movie is still happening, but it will have to overcome one major obstacle to succeed.

Why Lois Hasn’t Been Able To Understand Stewie (But Other Griffins Can)

Family Guy Has Been Inconsistent With Whom Understands Stewie

While Brian, who’s voiced by MacFarlane, is understood by all,Family Guyhas played with the idea that only certain characters can understand the incredibly well-spoken Stewie (also MacFarlane). Often,Family Guy’s episodes pair Brian and Stewietogether, allowing the latter to be fully understood by his scene partner. Lois, however, is a more confusing example. Stewie often speaks directly to his mother, but her responses, when they come, are usually quite vague. Weighing in on the debate,MacFarlane claims everyone can understand Stewie, but they just don’t take the toddler seriouslyand, like Lois, choose to ignore him.

Family Guy Season 23 Breaks 20-Year-Old Series Tradition After Being Removed From Fox’s Fall Slate

Family Guy season 23 breaks a 20-year-old series tradition after it gets removed from Fox’s Fall 2024 TV slate, despite having a full season planned.

Lois Understanding Stewie Likely Won’t Stick In Family Guy Season 23

The Plotline Seems Like A One-Off For Family Guy

Since Lois will finally understand Stewie when the two are high, the plot point probably won’t become a full-fledgedFamily Guyseason 23 plot development. Instead, it’s highly likely Lois will think she imagined her marijuana-induced chat with her toddler. When she’s sober again,Lois Griffin will probably revert to her old waysof not being able to understand (or, as MacFarlane puts it, willfully ignoring) Stewie Griffin. In addition to being a humorousFamily Guyepisode hook, the idea of Stewie and Lois having a legitimate conversation opens the door to some real (though brief) character development.
