If you live in an area with minimal public transportation, chances are, you depend on a car to get you to where you need to be. Owning your own automobile brings with it a sense of independence; driving virtually any route, anywhere, on your own terms. But it’s also dangerous.

In fact, it’s one of the leading causes of death in the entire United States. And in the worst types of accidents, seconds count. That’s why if you’re a Pixel owner and drive regularly, you’ve got to activate a feature called Car Crash Detection.

What Is the Pixel’s Car Crash Detection Feature?

Just as the name implies, car crash detection detects when you’ve been in a car accident. The feature is available on the Pixel 3 and later and needs an active SIM or eSIM. It works by using a combination of the Pixel’s location, motion sensors, and even ambient audio to detect when a crash has occurred.

When an accident is detected, the phone vibrates and blares an alarm at maximum volume, and asks you if you need assistance. See how it works below.

If you state you need help or don’t respond at all, your Pixel phone will contact emergency services and an emergency contact(s) of your choice. Let’s set that up now.

Turn On and Configure Car Crash Detection

First, you need to add an emergency contact:

Return toSafety & emergencyscreen once more and tapEmergency contacts. If you’ve already added an emergency contact, no further action is needed. To add another, selectAdd contact, then choose a contact from the Contacts app.

Finally, to activate car crash detection, go to theSafety & emergencyscreen, then tapCar crash detection. Select theCar crash detectionslider then selectOK.

The Emergency Location Service slider activated

If you choose to alert an emergency contact when you’ve been in an accident (highly recommended), scroll down and tap theEmergency Sharingslider. Going forward, if you are in a car accident, your select emergency contact(s) will be alerted along with emergency personnel.

Though it’s not necessary to set up car crash detection, considersetting up all of the Safety & emergency features on your Pixel phone. This will allow emergency personnel to have key medical information on your Pixel phone during an emergency.
