The ChromeOS operating system on your Chromebook features a handy Dark Mode that will turn the white backgrounds on most windows to black. It can therefore be useful when working in a low-light environment or if the standard display is giving you eyestrain. Here’s how to turn on Dark Mode on your Chromebook, and also how to disable it when you need to.
Turn on Dark Mode on Chromebook from Quick Settings
AChromebook is a cost-effective and useful laptop, and ChromeOS Dark Mode makes its display more usable in some situations. The quickest way to enable Dark Mode is to find the option in the Quick Settings panel.
That’s the quickest way to enable and disable Dark Mode on the Chromebook. Note that there’s no keyboard shortcut for Dark Mode. If you want to automate when Dark Mode is enabled, you’ll need to access theSet wallpaper & stylesettings screen.

While you’re able to navigate to theSet wallpaper & stylewindow from the Settings app, it’s quicker and easier to access it from the home screen.
Enable Dark Mode for All Web Content
As the name suggests, Dark Mode (aka “Dark theme”) turns white backgrounds to black on most windows and apps. It will also result in a dark theme for certain websites, including MakeUseOf.com.
Note that by default, it doesn’t work for all websites or content. For instance, the background of the Gmail screen remains white. There is a way to force Dark Mode to turn on for all websites and web content, however.

The only downside is that, once enabled, this experimental setting overrides the standard Dark Mode setting, so you can’t just turn off the latter to revert it to the default display. Instead, you’ll need to revisit the Chrome Experiments window and change the setting forAuto Dark Mode for Web Contentsback toDefault.
Now you know how to turn Dark Mode on and off on your Chromebook, and get it to toggle automatically at sunset and sunrise, you should find that the display causes less of a strain on your eyes. In addition, you’re able to turn on theNight Lightoption from the Quick Settings panel to make the colors of the display warmer and thus reduce blue light levels before you go to bed.
