How to Use Mondly VR to Learn a New Language
Mondly VR is a unique and innovative approach to learning a new language. Placing yourself within a virtual world to communicate with virtual characters seems like a great way to pick up a new language.
But how exactly do you use Mondly VR? Let’s have a look.

What Is Mondly VR?
The concept for Mondly VR, a virtual reality language-learning game, is simple. Mondly VR introduces a new dimension to the tried and true technique of practicing conversations in a language of your choice.
While wearing a VR headset, you’re able to look at and interact with virtual characters, who will recite words, phrases, and sentences for you to practice speaking.

Mondly VR does not introduce anything new or particularly groundbreaking to the practice of learning a language. Rather, it makes it easier to immerse yourself in conversation, as well as forcing your focus. It’s hard to get distracted while you have a headset strapped to your face.
If you’re at all familiar with theoriginal Mondly, you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into.

How to Set Up Mondly VR
Mondly VR has a quick set-up process, and it’s very similar toother variants of Mondly available.
Once you’ve purchased the game and installed it through the store of your choice, you’re able to launch the game and quickly get into configuring it to your needs.

The first choice you’re given is which language you want to learn. The pool of languages may seem rather limited, but there is a range of languages that use different sentence structures.
Next, you’ll be prompted to select a difficulty slider. There are three levels of difficulty, which means that learning isn’t very granular. There are some significant gaps between beginner and intermediate. It’s safest to start on beginner.

Finally, you’ll arrive at the main menu screen. Over in the bottom left-hand corner is an option to set the language you currently speak. This should auto-detect based on your system settings, but if it doesn’t, this is where you change it. You’ll be provided with the same languages to choose from as before.
Once all of that is set, you’re ready to jump into Mondly VR.
How to Play Mondly VR
There are three main modes you can play in Mondly VR. Vocabulary will cover your basic words, grammar and sentence structure.
Conversations are the meat of the product, allowing you to run through simulated conversations in the language you’ve chosen.
Finally, multiplayer offers the chance to practice your language skills with other players. This can be a one-on-one practice session or two players running through a language course.
Each category has different courses and topics to cover. We’ll hop into the intro course of the Vocabulary category.
In the introductory course, you’ll stand facing a virtual character who will introduce you to some words, and prompt you to speak them back.
Importantly, Mondly VR does not expect you to respond to every prompt. Simply sit back and listen, and when prompted, respond by pointing your controller at thered speaker iconand holding the trigger.
Make sure to speak clearly and to hold the red speaker icon down until you’re done. Mondly VR will then process your voice input and decipher if you’ve said the word or phrase correctly.
This system doesn’t provide direct feedback for mistakes, so it may be frustrating for some users. The game will display what it has detected you saying, however. This can help nudge you along to the correct pronunciation.
This is more or less the extent of how Mondly VR can help you learn a new language. It may be incredibly helpful depending on what aspect of the language you’re struggling with, but it could also be lacking in features for more advanced users.
Learning a New Language Is Difficult, but There Are Apps to Help
Mondly VR is easy to set up and play, and introduces a few innovative new methods of learning a language. Unfortunately, it’s arguably a bit lacking in features, and not many languages are represented.
Still, if learning a language in VR sounds good to you, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in Mondly VR. If not, there are plenty of other apps out there to help you out.
