Summary
House of the Dragonstar Sonoya Mizuno has opened up about the romance plan between Rhaenyra and Mysaria, explaining how their moment at the end of season 2, episode 6 was planned long ago. DuringHouse of the Dragonseason 2, episode 6’s ending, Mysaria describes her horrifying past to the queen, resulting in the pair sharing a hug with one another. However, that hug soon turns into a kiss, which gets interrupted with news of Seasmoke having a new rider.
Speaking withTV Insiderabout Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s relationship,Mizuno explained howHouse of the Dragon’s relationship between the two was planned even before season 1 began.The kiss was also designed by the lead actors, who had a say in how exactly it would transpire. After I got the job and spoke to the showrunners, they said that this was a potentiality. They said the plan was definitely for Mysaria and Rhaenyra to start working together with a potential for romance. So I knew before we started Season 1. I think it was then we got the scripts for Season 2, and at the end of this episode, I remember it said, “Their foreheads are touching. There’s just breath between them. And then what happens next is interrupted.” But it didn’t define what the thing was that happened, and we had many conversations about it in pre-production and during production, but both Emma and I felt very strongly that we didn’t want the moment to be queer-baiting in any way, so there was that. But there was also kind of finding the truth of that moment and their relationship, and it felt very right that was where it was going. It was kind of a collaborative decision to get where it got to.
Yeah, it was very much an ongoing discussion in pre-production and in-production. I think at some point the decision was it should be a kiss. It should be intimate. But how that moment happened, we didn’t actually plan until the day, and it was Emma who felt in that moment that Rhaenyra wanted to hold Mysaria and comfort her. She’d been so open with her and wanted to comfort her. I think the hug was so, in a way, enlightening for both of them because I don’t think either of them get hugged or have been hugged like that. I mean, when do you see people hug inHouse of the Dragon? You see people f***ing, and you see people slapping each other on the back. There was something in that moment that felt so thrilling to be so intimately connected, and it felt then so organic to move into the kiss from there. I think our relationship has a kind of frankness to it, and it was there from the beginning. Mysaria was like, “This is what I’m like.” They had that frankness with each other, so to get to that place felt organic, and it also didn’t feel snaky in any way or manipulative on either part.
What House Of The Dragon’s New Romance Means For Rhaenyra’s War
Her New Love Must Be Protected
Rhaenyra and Mysaria’s relationship blossomed during a tumultuous time in the civil war, with the Blacks desperate for more dragon riders while Daemon is amassing an army on his own at Harrenhal. This has led to strife within their ranks, as the queen is no longer certain if she can trust her husband’s motives, believing he could be planning to usurp her. Given the connection her and her new ally have made over the course of the last few episodes, it seems the logical next step was for the pair to find romantic comfort in one another.
Due to Rhaenyra already being married, the duo are going to have to keep their relationship a secret from the rest ofHouse of the Dragon’s cast. This is especially important for Daemon, who could use the information against her in a bid to take the throne.It may also delegitimize her in the eyes of the people for cheating on her husband, something her side can’t afford after giving King’s Landing supply drops of food. Because of their secrecy, it’s unclear just what this means for their relationship as it develops.
Now that the pair are romantically linked,it also gives Mysaria more influence over the war and the decisions Rhaenyra makesin order to win back her throne. With the season almost at its end, it seems this will be explored further inHouse of the Dragonseason 3, as the war’s events and battles begin to get even more deadly. With the pair’s relationship putting a lot at stake for the sake of their happiness, it remains to be seen how it will grow further as the show continues.
