Bob Hearts Abishola Co-Creator Says The Cancelation Is Part Of A Broader TV Diversity Problem
Gina Yashere Discusses TV Studios Only Caring About Diversity When They’re Pushed To
Bob Hearts Abisholaco-creator Gina Yashere was not necessarily surprised that her show was canceled and considers that part of a wider problem of TV diversity. In an interview withThe Wrap, Yashere, who also co-stars inBob Hearts Abisholaas Oluwakemi “Kemi” Adeyemi, said,
“It always happens that way. Some big event galvanizes all these networks and causes people to go, ‘Oh, no, equality. We need to be less racist.’ And then they do this big show of performative bookings and employment of people. Then, when the zeitgeist dies down, they start quietly letting go of all these big ideas that they originally were singing about to the rooftops. It’s that last in, first out thing.”

Yashere’s problem with how CBS, and studios and networks in general, treat shows likeBob Hearts Abisholais they see them only as a way to take advantage of the cultural zeitgeist. But representation isn’t a fad. It’s critical in all facets of life, including film and television, and Yashere’s point is that networks need to consider diverse productions as a matter of course, not a matter of what’s currently trending.
