Summary
Jujutsu Kaisen’s protagonist, Yuji Itadori, has faced criticism for not fully captivating fans in his role as the series' main character. Gege Akutami’s unique portrayal of Yuji has led to doubts about his position as the central hero. While the recently released chapters of the series have given some prominence toYuji’s character by revealing his connection to the series' final villain, one other major character has always been crafted at the heart of the plot points of the series, making him the ideal protagonist.
The character in question is none other than the deuteragonist of the series, Megumi Fushiguro. Almost all the narrative that unfolds in Gege Akutami’sJujutsu Kaisenputs Megumi at its center. From the perspective of a newcomer, it is also easy to assume that Megumi, in fact, is the main hero, and the narratives that have unraveled through the series' progression only solidify this fact.

One of the story’s major plot points that hint at why Megumi is the ideal protagonist is his clear motivation for becoming a sorcerer. Unlike the current main character, who lacks a compelling reason for entering the jujutsu world, Megumi is driven by the desire to save his sister, Tsumiki Fushiguro.

With Yuta taking the lead in the fight against Sukuna, Yuji is being shoved to the sidelines once more.
Megumi Fushiguro Is Jujutsu Kaisen’s Ideal Protagonist
All Major Plot Points in Jujutsu Kaisen Center Around Megumi Fushiguro
Yuji Itadori doesn’t have any actual motivation for being a sorcerer and when he is asked about it, particularly by Noritoshi Kamo in episode #21 ofJujutsu Kaisen, the protagonist succinctly reflects that he just wants to help others, as his grandfather would have wanted him. In contrast, Megumi Fushiguro’s motivation to become a sorcerer is rooted in his desire to help his sister. As the series progresses, it is also revealed thatToji Zenin is Megumi’s father, solidifying Megumi’s significant inheritance and aligning him with the archetypal shōnen protagonist who bears a strong familial legacy.
Whereas, Megumi Fushiguro has a stronger foundation forbeing a protagonist than Yuta Okkotsudue to his significant character growth. Unlike Yuta, who was overpowered from the start, Megumi has had to work hard to become a stronger sorcerer. Consequently, this is why even Gojo is out of the running due to his godly inheritance from birth. Additionally, Megumi holds a double-edged trump card, as often seen with many protagonists in shōnen. Much like Naruto, Megumi possesses a demon that is a threat unless controlled, which Megumi has failed to do so, causing a massacre during the Shibuya arc as a side effect due to Sukuna and Mahoraga’s fight.

Last but not least, Megumi has also been the interest of the series' main villain due to his inheritance of great power, which also resonates with otherShōnen Jumpprotagonists, such as Deku’s inheritance of One For All has made him a primal target of All For One.Jujutsu Kaisenwould have unfolded quite differently if Megumi had been the main hero, potentially relegating Yuji to the role of deuteragonist, a position fans often perceive him in.This shift would have allowed Megumi to uncover the truth about his father, adding further depth and complexity to his character. All this evidence elevates Megumi Fushiguro as arguably the most real hero ofJujutsu Kaisen, more so than Yuji, Yuta, or Gojo.
