The closest she’s come to growing up is in last year’sMs. Marvel: The New Mutantminiseries, where she attends Empire State University, albeit for her high school’s summer program, so yes, still 16. It’s also worth noting that a26-year-old Kamala Khan as Captain Krakoais depicted in the dark future ofRise of the Powers of X, but because it’s a potential future rather than a set one, it doesn’t quite count either.If this anniversary special confirms Kamala’s actual future, depicting her as an adult, even for a one-off, is something of a milestone for the character.

Superheroes tend to reach their biggest potential and achievements when storylines allow for them to grow up and improve with age. Spider-Man’s adulthood is an example, as much as Marvel can be hesitant tolet him finally grow up. Kamala Khan could finally be on the same route. Again, even as a one-off, a story like this could influence other creative teams within Marvel to start allowing Kamala to grow older, even slightly. With age,Ms. Marvelinches closer to realizing her potential as one of Marvel’s best heroes.
