Warning: Spoilers for My Hero Academia, Chapter #428

Summary

My Hero Academiaintroduced a new class of first-year students at UA in chapter 428, but these first-years all share one thing in common: an unwavering respect for the students who came before them and participated in the final war. It’s this respect and admiration which sets the new class apart in a distinct way, and shows how the world of heroes is improving.

Chapter 428 opens withthe new students harassing Bakugoand Todoroki, much to the chagrin of Iida. The new students make it clear that many of them were driven to apply to UA by the exploits of Class 1-A (now 2-A), and as a result are fawning over their heroes in much the same way that Class 1-A once did towards All Might. While Bakugo, Todoroki, and the rest of Class 2-A are able to move on with their recovery work for the day, it turns out that isn’t the last we’ll see of the new first-years.

Iida stands between the first-year students and Bakugo and Todoroki, chastising them.

While repairing and cleaning up the city, the new students make their appearance once more, to apologize for their earlier behavior.

My Hero Academia’s New First-Years Prove Society is Healing

The New Students Are Here to Help, Not For Glory

While the students are cleaning up, they’re joined by the residents of the area, who admit that it’s time they stepped up and helped themselves. Working together with the citizens, Class 2-A gets down to business picking up the area, but soon see that a bus of first-years has unexpectedly arrived at the scene. They turn out to be here to apologize for their earlier actions, but feel that words aren’t enough, and begin chipping in with the clean-up efforts as well. The assembled group is able to move through their work with relative ease, and as a civilian notes, “One turn of good, hard work inspires the next.”

This cycle of inspiration is key to fixing the problems that the villains highlighted in hero society.Society was simply too dependent on a small number of heroes to take care of everything, and people weren’t taking the actions that they could to help. While the citizens being inspired to help out and clean up their own city is a great first start, it’s these new first-year students who really represent the hope for the future. They saw the struggles of Class 2-A firsthand, recognized how hard what they were doing is, and still chose to help out anyway.

As if to prove they’re here for more than just shallow dreams of being a hero, the new first-years show up to aid in the clean-up efforts–far from a glamorous activity, to be sure, and yet they’re prepared to work hard at it anyway. There’s a distinct difference between how these first-years are approaching heroics than how much of Class 1-A did when they were first-years.Admiration of All Might certainly drove many students to attend UA, but it was almost in a glory-chasing sort of way, as everyone was concerned with being the #1 hero.

The new first-years aren’t concerned with reaching the top; they just want to help out, and that’s a far better approach. It’s the first sign that things are changing in society, and that means great things forMy Hero Academia’s future.
