What Happened In Nier: Automata Ver1.1a Episode 16?

Produced By A-1 Pictures; Directed By Satsuki Takahashi

Nier: Automata Ver1.1aepisode #16, “broken [W]ings,” continued where episode #15 left off with 2B and 9S returning to Earth to carry on YoRHa’s will. Unfortunately, they were quickly met with resistance from more corrupted YoRHa soldiers, and despite their best efforts, 2B and 9S were blown out of the sky to differing locations. 9S winded up in the desert and soon ended up in a fight against two massive machine lifeforms, and as for 2B, she lost an arm after her crash landing and was informed thatshe was infected with the Logic Virus, once again.

2B struggled to suppress the Logic Virus as she fought off more machine lifeforms, but the damage she had sustained made that impossible and it continued to circulate through her system. 2B quickly reached the point of no return with the Logic Virus, and at that time, A2, the rogue android who had been killing YoRHa soldiers, appeared before 2B. With no other options,2B asked A2 to kill her while taking on her memories and duty to protect 9S before the Logic Virus overtook her, all of which A2 agreed to without a word.

The two Hegel units

By the time 9S defeated the massive machine lifeforms and found 2B, she was already dead, and as far as 9S knows, A2 had killed 2B in cold blood. 9S charged at A2 in a fit of rage and broken sanity, but at that moment, a mysterious white structure massive in scale shot up from the ground and separated the two of them by force.9S swore to kill A2 and avenge 2B’s death, and the episode ended with 2B’s pod synching with A2 as per 2B’s final request.

Nier: Automata’s Anime Perfectly Adapted 2B’s Death

Nier: Automata Ver1.1aended up not changing 2B’s death from the videogame in any notable way, but the execution of it was still incredible. The animation and artwork were naturally great, but more than that, the music and overall direction ofNier: Automata Ver1.1aepisode #16 did a perfect job of selling the tragedy of 2B’s death, with the music and voice acting doing wonders to sell it even more than the game did. 2B’s death was the one moment from theNier: Automatagamethe anime had to succeed with more than any other, and fortunately, it went above and beyond.

Nier: Automata’s Anime Delivers Its Best & Saddest Episode Yet

Nier: Automata Ver1.1aepisode #16 was the anime’s saddest episode yet, and it was also its best. The centerpiece of the episode was 2B’s death, and in addition to the stellar animation and direction,Nier: Automata Ver1.1aepisode #16 added more to 2B’s death by interjecting scenes of her time with 9S into the episode, with each one showing off just how much she had grown over the story, despite her insistence on not showing emotion. All of that served to add even more weight to her death, and overall, it was great to see.

The biggest standout there, of course, was 9S and his reaction to 2B’s death.Natsuki Hanae’s performance as 9S perfectly captured the anger and anguish he felt witnessing 2B’s death, and as always, the animation of the artwork did wonders to complement the emotion of what he was going through. Between its emotional writing and stellar direction,Nier: Automata Ver1.1aepisode #16 was a great episode on all fronts, and thanks to that, there’s plenty to look forward to as the anime enters its next arc.
