Sonic x Shadow Generations Reintroduces A Rare Game Character

The Character First Appeared In A 2003 Game

The next mainlineSonicgame is going to beSonic x Shadow Generations, a remaster of the 2011 gameSonic Generationswith an added storyline for Shadow. In the game,Black Doom from 2005’sShadow the Hedgehogreturns to torment the Ultimate Lifeformwith his past. The anti-hero has to traverse through a variety of familiar stages from past games he’s starred in, trying to defeat the alien leader once and for all. The game appears to be a reintroduction for the character, whose appearance paves the way for a larger future in the franchise.

However, before the game comes out on October 25, a three-episode webseries,Sonic x Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings, will be released, chronicling Shadow’s past in a 2D animated prologue. A preview of the first episode was premiered at Anime Expo in early July. In the video,Shadow protects Mariaand Gerald Robotnik from Emerl, a robot aboard Space Colony ARK.Emerl is a key part of Shadow’s backstory, one that is rarely touched upon withinSonicmedia. However, his video game story could hint at his secret appearance inSonic the Hedgehog 3.

Emerl’s Backstory In Sonic The Hedgehog Explained

Emerl Is Part Of Shadow’s Backstory

Emerl is first introduced in the Game Boy Advance gameSonic Battle. An ancient robot called a Gizoid created at least 4,000 years ago, Emerl is responsible for the destruction of his civilization. Eventually,he was discovered and reprogrammed by Gerald aboard the ARK, using his granddaughter Maria as a basis for his personality. While he became an ally of Sonic and his friends during his debut game, he ultimately had to be destroyed when he tried to bring chaos to the planet.

In a later game for the same console, titledSonic Advance 3, anewSonicvillain was introduced, an antagonistic Gizoid known as Gemerl. Created by Dr. Robotnik using Emerl’s data, Gemerl also went rogue, stopping only after being defeated and safely reprogrammed to his normal function, thus turning him back into Emerl. As evidenced by both games and iterations of the character,Emerl has a strong connection to the Robotnik family, as well as Shadow’s backstory aboard the ARK. Which would make him the perfect candidate for a surprise appearance in the nextSonic the Hedgehogmovie.

Emerl would go on to make cameos in otherSonicgames, and even showed up in the anime seriesSonic X.

Why Emerl Should Be Introduced In Sonic The Hedgehog 3

The Movie Would Remain Consistent With His Game Backstory

If Emerl makes a surprise appearance inSonic the Hedgehog 3,it would open the door for a future movie to better explore his backstory and connection with Shadow. It would also keep the film faithful to Shadow’s in-game lore, since both of them were on the ARK with Gerald at the same time. Perhaps the movie could also incorporate the fight fromDark Beginnings, revealing Emerl as more than just a random robot aboard the Space Colony. It’s also possible Emerl just makes a cameo, keeping faithfulness to the games without drawing focus away from Shadow.

Although it’s unclear ifSonic the Hedgehog 3features another villainor even a hero in the form of Emerl, the movie should make reference to him for the sake of consistency with Shadow’s game backstory. While his appearance doesn’t need to be a big part of the movie, him showing up would be a good way to set the stage for apotentialSonic the Hedgehog 4. Even if he’s not a big focus of the movie franchise,it would be a neat nod to both Shadow’s history and his new game if he did show up.
