Now that DALL-E 3 has an editing feature, you may make several quick improvements to your AI art with these effective editing prompts. We’ll cover how to correct issues in your images, along with what you can do to add new backgrounds, sharpen image sections, and much more.

1Change Object Colors

One of the easiest ways to edit your AI art is by changing object colors where necessary. I asked DALL-E 3 to create a photorealistic donut. After receiving the original image, I decided to change the glazing color to pink with this simple prompt:

Please change the glazing color to pink

As you can see from the result below, I got what I asked for.

You can use this editing prompt with clothes, skies, and numerous other objects.

2Remove Objects From Your Pictures

When yougenerate an image in DALL-E 3, you’ll normally receive a prototype that you may then work from. However, you won’t necessarily want to keep everything in your picture. Let’s look at the example below, where I asked DALL-E 3 to give me a landscape image for an NYC street scene.

I wanted to remove the white truck on the left, so I selected it and asked DALL-E to get rid of it. As you can see from the picture below, it’s no longer in the frame.

3Correct Problems in Your Image

I’ve had several issues in DALL-E 3 before, such as flags looking weird or spelling errors. If you don’t want to remove these altogether, it’s possible to edit them. To correct these issues, you can follow the same steps I showed you in the previous section. Choose the area that needs fixing and tell DALL-E 3 what to do with it.

You should be as specific as possible to get the best result. Using theseAI prompting tips and trickswill also help you generate better art.

4Change Clothing Items

If you want to change what someone’s wearing, you can easily ask DALL-E 3 to make your requested changes. I’ve asked DALL-E 3 to create an image of a person with this prompt:

Please generate an image of a young person who works for a tech company. They will dress in smart casual.

This was the result I received:

I decided that I wanted to use the same model but give them glasses. This was the result that I got, which I was happy with:

If you want to use AI art, it’s important to consider the ethics. This guide onhow to use AI art ethicallywill help you do that.

5Add New Backgrounds

Many photo editing tools, like Adobe Firefly, let you quickly replace backgrounds in your images. It’s possible tochange the background of your image in Canva, too, and you can do the same in DALL-E 3 if you aren’t happy with what your picture has. I asked DALL-E 3 to create a landscape image and got this result:

I wanted to change the sky, however, and asked DALL-E 3 to give me a sunset instead. After doing that, I received this result:

Besides changing the sky, you may also use DALL-E 3 to change portrait background colors. Make sure that you select the region you want adjusted to get more precise results.

6Change and Object’s Position

It’s also possible to change where specific objects are in your picture. This can work well for portraits, street scenes, and similar types of imagery. In the picture from the previous section, I wanted to move the island in the lake further back. So, I selected this and asked DALL-E 3 to do that for me.

After asking the AI to move the island further back, it did so subtly. If I wanted to move it even further back, I would have been more specific with my prompt. For example, if there’s a car in your image, you can ask DALL-E 3 to move it to the left or right.

For my image, DALL-E 3 also didn’t have much room for maneuvering. So, if you need to move objects, you may want to create more space for the GPT to get you the exact result you’re looking for.

7Add Reflections

Adding reflections to your images is one of manycool smartphone photography tricks that actually work, and including these in your DALL-E 3 images will also make your AI art stand out. You’ll often get these included when you use water in your pictures, but you’re able to still ask DALL-E 3 to add specific reflections and adjust where necessary. I asked for this image of a lake in a city to begin with:

As you can see below, DALL-E 3 did completely change the angle of this picture. So, depending on what you want with your reflections, you may need to experiment a little here. And again, it helps to be as specific as possible.

8Sharpen Parts of Your Picture

Sometimes, we’ll get pictures in DALL-E 3 that aren’t as sharp as we’d like. This is precisely what happened in the image you saw in the previous section. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to change this.

After selecting the building closest to the lake, I asked DALL-E 3 to add a bit of sharpness. This was the result I got:

9Add New Characters to the Scene

If you want to add people or animals to your DALL-E 3 images, you’re able to ask the GPT to include them after getting your initial picture. I asked DALL-E 3 to create a picture of a family Christmas gathering. This was the initial result:

Since there was no dog included, I decided to change that, and gave the GPT this prompt:

Please add a golden retriever sitting on the floor and looking happy

Since this changed the image completely, I selected where I wanted the dog to appear instead. After doing that, I still didn’t get the desired result. So, I asked it again—while the people in the picture changed, I was at least happy with this result:

DALL-E3 has several editing capabilities, but as it’s still in its early phases, you may have to try several times before you get the results you’re looking for. Each of the prompts we’ve given in this guide should get you started with producing better art.
