In this universe, America no longer exists as a country, making America Chavezthe perfect sidekick for a version of Captain America who seeks to restore the idealized version of the country. The newUltimateCap has a lot to take in about his new world, but for the time being, readers know only as much as he does. That extends to his encounter with America, the character, inUltimates#2. The villainous Doctor Midas suggests he thinks America is from the future, but has never been able to get a word out of her during her time in captivity.
This new Ultimate Universe, Earth-6160, has a dark and still somewhat mysterious past. Readers know that it was manipulated and brought under the control of the Maker, the evil Reed Richardsof the original Ultimate Universe, but the exact events that led to the USA’s downfall have only been teased so far. Familiarevents like the JFK assassinationstill happened, but the exact nature of why the United States disbanded in 1969 remains unknown to readers.

Chavez’s potential future origins are noteworthy, given the importance of time travel to this universe. The latest incarnation of theUltimateUniverse has a unique ticking clock, as established at the end of the miniseriesUltimate Invasion, which rebirthed the line of alternate continuity Marvel stories. The Maker is set to return from a time-accelerated imprisonment in 18 months, while much further in the future, Tony Stark has gone bad, and become a version of Kang the Conqueror. What point on the timeline America Chavez originates from could have major implications for theUltimatesas the series unfolds.
America Chavez Will Be A Powerful Asset In The Ultimate Fight Against Tyranny

America’s role inThe Ultimates#2, in conjunction with Midas, who in this world is a CEO who owns the White House, is potently symbolic, Midas is the gold-armored representation of American capitalism, depicted literally stealing the power of America Chavez – metaphorically America’s youth and its future – to keep himself rich and alive. In a real world where the future can seem hopeless for younger generations, and wealth inequality is a grim reality of everyday life,Ultimates#2 uses its characters and setting to make a socially relevant point.
It will be interesting to see America Chavez’s perspective on Cap’s mission. She might be named America, but the world she grew up in is unknown. Cap obviously sees her as a symbol for what he’s fighting for, but whether she will want to be that symbol remains to be determined. America has been tortured and imprisoned for years, and nowCap will ask herto step up and save the world.America Chavezlikely won’t have a choice though, asCaptain America’smission is more important than any one person.

The Ultimates#2is available now from Marvel Comics.
Captain America
Initially debuting in 1940, Captain America is the patriotically themed superhero who has shared the title with only a few individuals. Beginning with Steve Rogers, Captain America’s birth resulted from a frail man taking part in an experimental U.S. Army super-soldier trial, which imbued him with super-human abilities. The character is often depicted wielding a nigh unbreakable and aerodynamic shield made of vibranium that they use to defend and attack their foes.
