Summary
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Dexter & Dexter: New Blood.
One of the more surprising revelations fromSan Diego Comic-Conwas the news that Michael C. Hall would be returning to his most famous role inDexter: Resurrection. After the critically pannedseries finale ofDexterin 2013, audiences were given the chance of a proper send-off to the titular murderer with a revival series in 2021. The show was promised to audiences as a way to right the wrongs of the original finale andgive Dexter the send-off that viewers felt was deservedand for the most part, it was.

One of the main controversies with the series finale in 2013 was thatthe show never gave the characters a concrete ending. Fast-forward to 2021 andDexter: New Bloodrevealed that he had faked his death and taken on a new identity, attempting to live a humble life in the Alaskan wilderness. However, the announcement of a second revival series,Dexter: Resurrection, appears to be rehashing the mistakes of the original series and sequel series, but if handled properly, there’s a way he could return without undoing the weight ofNew Blood’s finale.
Wait, Did Dexter Morgan Survive New Blood’s Ending?! New Sequel Show Explained
The news that Michael C. Hall will return in Dexter: Resurrection makes his character’s fate at the end of New Blood more than a little confusing.
Dexter Will Be A Figment Of Harrison’s Imagination
Imaginary friends have benefits
Throughevery season ofDexterandDexter: New Blood, Dexter Morgan has battled with his “dark passenger(s)".These manifestations of his subconscious acted as a moral compassthat would take on the appearance of his foster father, Harry. Throughout the many seasons ofDexterandDexter: New Blood, those manifestations also took the form of his foster sister Deborah Morgan, his deceased wife Rita, and his biological brother Brian Moser, otherwise known as “The Ice Truck Killer.” Dexter could return toDexter: Resurrectionthrough these hallucinations, playing a vital role for the series' protagonist, Harrison.
Why Resurrecting Dexter Would Be A Mistake
This Seems Awfully Familiar
After the announcement ofDexter: Resurrection, Michael C. Hall sat for an interview withVarietyto discuss the new series and question how his character could return. When Hall was asked about the possibility of his character returning, Hall replied, ““It’s really cold out there. Um. Really cold.“The remarkinsinuates that Dexter doesn’t die in the Alaskan wilderness, as the show leads viewers to believe. However, bringing Dexter back from the dead againwould be a detriment to his characterand taint the legacy of both shows.
Dexteris no stranger to clunky plot lines and as the series trudges on,the quality ofDexterseemingly diminishedin each subsequent season. Rehashing the death fake-out, again, would not start the newly announcedDexter: Resurrectionon a solid foundation. At its core, Dexter is a show about ethics, morality, and whether ends should justify the means, andanother resurrection for Dexter Morgan would be a mistakethat would cheapen its predecessors and start the continuation of Dexter’s story off on the wrong foot.
