Reddit is a place where you can create or find some informative, long-form content on any topic that you’re interested in. Whenever a valuable post has been created that’s relevant to its intended audience, it can be rewarded with awards and coins. If your post receives an award it’ll have a little badge icon next to it.
However, Reddit announced that it’s retiring the awards and coins feature.
Reddit’s Awards and Coin System Is Ending
After years of featuring on the platform, Reddit’s awards and coins system will be ending, as reported by the mod team on aReddit postfrom July 29, 2025. The ability for you to purchase awards and coins has already disappeared, but any awards or coins you currently possess can be used until June 18, 2025.
You may be sad to hear this news if you frequently use the platform. Don’t worry though, Reddit will be replacing the system with something new.
Why Reddit Is Ending Awards and Coins
In the Reddit mod post announcing the shutting down of the awards system, it is mentioned that the platform is seeking simplicity. This change is, in the eyes of the Reddit team, part of their efforts towards achieving that simplicity. There are over 50 awards, which the product team says it feels is more complicated than it needs to be. Whether you use awards or not, you’ll probably agree that the system is certainly a little bloated.
While the awards and coins system will be retired, a way to draw extra attention to posts will remain. The mod team has promised that a newer, simpler system will be released shortly after September 2023.
Is the Award System’s End Beneficial?
The changing of Reddit’s award system isn’t the only change that’s been happening on the platform in 2023. Reddit also made a change to its API fees, which led tomany major subreddits going dark.
It is arguable that the award system has become a little bloated, so a simpler system would make things easier for you. Rather than having to decide which award is most appropriate for a particular post, a streamlined system could signpost which award is most relevant.
Awards and Coins Are Being Shelved On Reddit
Awards and coins are being shelved on Reddit in an effort to make the platform simpler. If you have awards or coins still on your account you’ll want to use these up before early September before they are taken away forever.
Time will tell whether the replacement system coming out proves to be a better version.
